Managing Information on the Net: The Digital Object Architecture Robert E. Kahn
A key to the success of the Internet as a means of world-wide communications connectivity has been its open-architecture with defined interfaces, objects and protocols. Key more..
attributes of that open architecture will be reviewed in the context of its application to information management on the Internet. The Digital Object Architecture will be presented and its role in the handling of institutional as well as personal and/or proprietary information will be discussed along with the way in which organizations can both protect and share information in the future.
The Digital Object Architecture is a very general architectural approach to managing information on the net, much as the Internet architecture was a very general approach to interconnecting networks and computers. One specific focus of the architecture is on applications where the information may need to be persist over very long periods of time, where it may be moved many times from site to site and platform to platform over its lifetime, where authentication of the information or the individuals and systems is important, and where terms and conditions on access may exist. The key component of this architecture is the Digital Object, a platform independent data structure that has a unique persistent identifier. The Handle System will be presented and its role as a general purpose resolution mechanism will be discussed. Finally, an open architecture approach to federated repositories and registries will also be discussed along with selected applications of the technology.

New Designs for Future Applications Mona Bakr Mohamed
Nanostructural materials of unique physical and electronic properties are the building blocks of electronic and optical devices and other functional materials, which have great more..
potential for developing new nanotechnology including applications as drug carriers, biolables, photovoltics, light emitting diodes and lasers. New synthetic methods have been developed to achieve complete control over the shape of the nanocrystals and to prepare more complex-shaped nanostructures such as a few dots linked together forming nanochains, rods linked together to form tetrapods, coating the nanocrystals with another layer a different material, or even doping the nanocrystal with another different atom. Such control over linking, branching, coating or doping throughout the growth of the nanocrystals allows more potential applications ranging from information processing to artificial photosynthesis. In addition, the possibility of using these nanostructural materials to be used in high performance solar cells and optoelectronic devices will be exposed. Factors affecting the shape of the nanocrystals will be discussed. The new optical properties associated with these new shapes will be revealed.

Universal Networking Language
The mission of the UNL program, initiated within the United Nations and devised by the Universal Networking Digital Language (UNDL) Foundation, is to enable all people to generate more..
information and have access to cultural knowledge in their native languages. UNL is an artificial language attempting to replicate the functions of natural language in human communication.
In July 2004, partnership with UNDL was established and an agreement was signed in favor of BA to host the Ibrahim Shihata Arabic-UNL Center (ISAUC). The Center is funded by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) in honor of the memory of Dr. Ibrahim Shihata, an international jurist and expert on international development and a great promoter of Arabic culture. ISAUC will play the major role in designing and implementing the Arabic component in the development of this language and will act as an active language center for Arabic. A team conducted by UNDL was formed with members from the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and qualified linguists from Egyptian universities.
