Matthias Weiter

Prof. Dr. Matthias Weiter, Humboldt University in Berlin From 2003 to 2007 Matthias Weiter served as head of the Middle East Division of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in Bonn. He coordinated the discussion and formulation of the German government’s strategy for development cooperation with the Arab Region. He now teaches International Development Affairs at the Humboldt University in Berlin, and on behalf of the German government he supports the establishment of German-Arab Master courses, to be implemented jointly by German and Arab Universities. He holds an M.A. in engineering and economics of the University of Hamburg, a PhD in Geography of the University of Giessen, and received a scholarship for a post-graduate course on international development, before he joined the German Government in 1973. Between 1973 and 2007 he served in various organisations and countries in the field of development cooperation, including Germany (BMZ, GTZ, and the NGO Nord-Sued-Bruecken-Stiftung), Indonesia, Egypt, Yemen, Belgium (EC) and the USA (MIT; UN).
